Active Newcastle is a four-year campaign funded by Sport England, Newcastle PCT and Newcastle City Council. Its aim is to make it easier for people who live or work in Newcastle to do more exercise more often.

The newly-constituted Friends of Newcastle Trees takes over the work of the Newcastle Tree Wardens as set up by the Newcastle City Council Tree Strategy. Tree Wardens from Friends of Newcastle Trees act as a 'neighbourhood watch' over the trees where they live, looking out for problems like vandalism, storm damage, disease, dead trees and reporting protected trees being damaged or under threat. You could also help find places to plant more trees in your area and join in with tree, hedgerow and woodland projects.

Wingrove benefits from some of the largest and most attractive green and open spaces in the city including the Town Moor, Nun's Moor, Hunter's Moor, and Exhibition Park. The Hoppings, Europe's largest travelling fair, is held annually on the Town Moor, and the Newcastle Mela is an annual event in Exhibition Park.
Nunsmoor Park, which has Green Flag status, is an area to walk, exercise and enjoy the outdoors. There are tennis courts and a bowling green, all-weather surface, play area and a sensory garden, maintained by volunteers and staff.

Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's divisions, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The Neighbourhood Response Manager for Wingrove ward is Susan Shaw. The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who: sweep the streets; pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drains, potholes and fly-tipping.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is committed to reducing the risk of fire in domestic premises through Home Safety Checks. Firefighters can visit your home, where you may be at the greatest risk from fire, and offer simple advice on fire safety, tailored to your needs. They can also, where necessary, fit free smoke detectors and, in certain cases, provide a deep fat fryer to replace a conventional chip pan.
Resources are currently targeted at those households most at risk, but the Fire Service will attend to you as soon as possible if you request this service.

Moorbank Botanic Garden is managed by Newcastle University and is located just next to the Cat & Dog Shelter. Staff are interested in hearing from local residents, groups and schools who are running projects linked to gardening or botany and could make use of the facilities, or even those who would like to volunteer and help to maintain the garden (inside the glasshouses and out). The garden is only open 4 days a year to the public, but welcome groups for tours who have pre-booked at other times. There is also a range of activities for schools and an openness to embrace new projects.

Is working with Wingrove Ward Committee to provide sporting opportunities for young people.
